8x10 Oil Painting on Illustration Board

Note: The colors are wayyyyy off on this one I have tried almost everything lol That orange in the bottom right threw off the whole pic. I even tried to scan it too. I will work on it and hope I can get it better. It also made Han Solo's face wash out too!! Enjoy and let me know what you think. Thanks!!

Here is a link to half the painting with much better color [link]

Wow...the depth and energy you get with a heavy medium like oils is nothing short of amazing... Again--as with the Chewbacca portrait--gorgeous light (I love how you achieve that "glow"--how do you DO that with oils...? :O_o:)--great details, great likenesses; and having Fett, hovering there in the shadows is perfect! Love this!

Wow, that honestly has to be the greatest comment I have received yet. Thank you so very much, I'm flattered. With Chewie, it’s not about being painted in oils, although it does help. The fact that it takes longer for oils to dry and you can blend them better because of it. Here is my key....I paint in two ways. First contrast of color, warm against cool and complementary colors too. If the body of the painting is warm(Chewbacca's fur)the shadows are cool, blue and or purple mixed with a little black or raw umber, burnt sienna or just flat out color. The second is contrast of lights and darks the "glow" is achieved by this and the first. The darkness of his fur and the contrast of the light green of the background. I didn't do a color study before hand, I never do but sometimes should lol I knew I wanted that green and was so happy I tried it. It works beautifully with the rest of it and makes the whole piece "POP" I also did these things in this painting too. I wish the color was better so everyone could see it. Contrast of color in this was the orange in the bottom right with the green of Jabba's "bong"(lol) and also the cool blue against the warm brown, yellows and greens of Jabba. Also the blue/black of Han's vest with the warm fur of Chewie. Then the cool blue against the warm blackish brown of the arch. The contrast of lights and darks was pretty much throughout the whole piece. I wanted to do a painting with Jabba in it, because I never painted him before and I've seen some very bad ones LOL I had a lot of fun with that whole thing and I'm happy for the most part, and I am very happy with how Jabba came out. I hope that has helped you and gave you a little better understanding of how I work. If you look at my other pieces too you can see those things in pretty much all of them, with the exception of a few. Thank you again and let me know if this has helped. Just keep the steps simple and it should work...if not you didn't hear it from me!! LOL :D

Thank you so much for such a detailed explanation of your techniques--it's very enlightening. I don't do much in color--it's proved many times an almost impossible task for me (no color sense, I guess), but I certainly appreciate the skill it takes to achieve results as smashing as yours. Props again, and for turning out such wonderful work as this for us all to enjoy (and Jabba did indeed turn out VERY well!)!

You are very welcomed. I'm always more then happy to share anything I know that may help someone else. Not everyone is. We all have a sense of color, it's a matter of finding it and working on it too. Like with drawing it all takes time. From the looks of your drawings you have a great understanding of form and contrast of lights and darks. There are colors there too, just find them little by little. Thank you agin for your praise!!

Thank you so much Dee :) You too have a friend in me forever & ever :) There are few people in this world that make others feel the way you do!! The world would be a better place if more were like you!! You are one of a kind my friend!! Any wonderful combination of words I could muster and ever dream of putting together fall short of the ones you have earned and deserve!!
I wish and pry for nothing but the very best for you my friend in all aspects of your life!!! Your words glow with love, hope, joy and happiness. I can only imagine how radiant you are in person my friend!! You are a living blessing in this world. Love always to you too my friend!! Norm ;)
